History of St John's College AFC

St John's first won Cuppers in 1908, but it was to be more than 70 years before they were to win it again and establish themselves as a major force in college football. Four successive Cuppers titles between 1981 and 1984 is a feat only matched by Oriel (1898/99-1901/02) and Brasenose (1922/23-1925/26) and only bettered by St Edmund Hall (1963/64-1971/72). In this time the First Division title was also captured twice in 1981/82 and 1982/83 as St John's became the first team to complete successive doubles. Since this period of domination, success has been much scarcer - a league title in 1991/92 and again in 1996/97 although that was followed by relegation the following season. Since the re-organisation of college football at the beginning of 2000/01, St John's have found themselves in the lower reaches of the JCR leagues - a brief highlight of success with the division 2 title in 2002/03 was snuffed out with relegation in 2003/04 and 2004/05 saw St John's finish only 1 place above dead last in the league. 2006/07 was slightly better with a mid-table finish in division 2.
